DLIA was
commissioned to create the fourth stage for the Stratford Festival of
Canada.
The designated space was an existing building which backs onto the Avon
Theatre in downtown Stratford. With the relocation of the shops that were
used for scenery design and construction to other premises, the space was
made available for conversion to theatre use. The theatre is designed for a
capacity of 250 seats in a thrust stage arrangement. The demolition of the
truck dock entrance to the building allowed for the construction of the
front entrance lobby for the theatre which features a sloping, illuminated
ceiling serving as a signpost for arriving patrons. New rehearsal halls and
dressing rooms allow for greater flexibility for the repertory artistic
company.
The construction costs were CDN$1.5 million. Opening night was July 13,
2002, as part of the celebrations for the Festival's 50th year.
