DLIA designed, in joint venture with
Marklevitz Architect of Stratford, the renovations to the Avon Theatre for
the Stratford Festival of Canada - the largest arts organization in Canada
and the 2nd largest in North America. The renovation provides new
sightlines to the proscenium stage, which has been moved back under the
opening, creating an expanded orchestra pit. A false proscenium serves as a
backdrop for a new cartouche to be mounted high above centre stage. DLIA's
design for the front of house is a complete renovation, creating a new
presence for the theatre in the downtown area. A front wall of granite,
echoing but updating the theatre's earlier days, is punctuated by new glazed
openings, with a glazed marquee announcing the main entrance to the theatre
on Downie Street. The George Street elevation is glazed from the Main Lobby
to the Upper Lobby animating the street and creating a sense of theatricality
for arriving and mingling patrons. The construction budget was $9,700,000.00.
Opening night was May 28, 2002, as part of the celebrations for the
Festival's 50th year. |
