The winner of a 1991 Economic Development Award from the Town of
Pickering, this church renovation and addition seamlessly blends into its
existing historic context. It was the first time that an architectural
project had received this award. The church sits in a prominent location just
to the north of Highway 401 at Whites Road. As a result of a successful fund
raising effort, and the sensitive design, the original 3,000 sq. ft. church
acquired additional congregation space, an underground gymnasium, a day care
centre and meeting rooms. The addition quadrupled the size of the original
structure. Using reclaimed brick, DLIA joined the large addition to the
original, giving very little indication of where the old ends and the new
begins. The day care centre, that forms part of the building, was funded by a
grant from the Ontario Ministry of Community and Social services. As well,
the entire building was made barrier free as a result of a grant from the
provincial Access Fund. In both cases, DLIA assisted the church committee in
obtaining these funds. |
